How to Choose a Shopify Agency in 2026
The difference between a great agency and a mediocre one shows up months after launch. Here is what to actually evaluate before you sign, from someone on the inside.
Look at outcomes, not portfolios
Every agency shows you their prettiest work. The better question is what happened after launch: did conversion improve, did the store get faster, did the brand keep working with them? Ask for stores that launched more than a year ago and are still running strong.
Reviews with real names and real brands matter more than logos on a slide. If you can click through to the store and see the work holding up in production, that is evidence.
Check how they think about conversion
A store is not a brochure. If an agency talks only about design and never about conversion rate, page speed, analytics, or checkout flow, you are buying a picture, not a store.
Ask them what they would measure in the first ninety days after launch. The good ones have an immediate, specific answer.
Partner status is a real signal
Shopify's partner tiers exist because Shopify vets the agencies it recommends. A Shopify Select Partner has verified launches, verified client outcomes, and a track record Shopify itself has reviewed. It is not the only signal, but it filters out a lot of noise.
Ask who does the work
Some agencies sell with senior people and deliver with subcontractors you never meet. Ask directly: who designs, who builds, who answers when something breaks at 9pm before a product drop?
One accountable team that designs, builds, and supports the store beats a chain of handoffs every time. Handoffs are where quality quietly dies.
Speed of communication predicts everything
How an agency behaves before the contract is the best version of them you will ever see. If replies take a week during the sales conversation, imagine the support experience after launch.
We reply within a day, usually much faster, and we tell clients when something will be ready instead of making them ask. That standard should be table stakes anywhere you sign.
The right size of partner
The biggest agencies bill the most and move the slowest. The cheapest freelancers disappear. The sweet spot for most DTC brands is a focused team that has shipped hundreds of stores, moves quickly, and treats your revenue like the scoreboard.
Whoever you choose, make them show you the work, the results, and the people. A serious partner will enjoy answering.
